How can a contractor get an Irish PPS number if moving to Ireland for a contract role?2023-04-18T10:06:08+01:00

A Personal Public Service Number (PPS number) is a unique reference number assigned to every individual taking up employment in Ireland.

A PPS number can be obtained from the Department of Social Protection. They must first register on www.mywelfare.ie

After registering they will receive an appointment slot (This is normally about 2 weeks after registering). They must bring the following documents with them to their appointment:

  • Passport and GNIB card
  • Evidence that they are living in Ireland, such as utility bills (e.g. electricity, telephone, gas bills etc). If they do not have any utility bills a lease agreement or letter from a landlord confirming they are renting a property or room is usually sufficient.
  • A letter that we can provide confirming their employment.

The day after your appointment you can obtain your PPS number by phone by calling 01-7043281 (You will receive the PPS number in the post approximately 5-7 working days later).

If you are non resident please phone 1890 927 999 (If you are calling from outside the Republic of Ireland please call + 353 71 967 2616)

Can contractors get a mortgage if they go Contracting?2023-04-18T10:05:08+01:00

One of the most common push backs we hear from people who are considering contracting is whether it could affect an application for a mortgage. It seems that there is a perception that the only way to get a mortgage is by being a permanent employee, which is not the case.

The rules for Professional Contractors and Permanent Employees are very similar when applying for a mortgage.

When we talk to contractors on their initial call with our Solutions Team we would always try to gauge if and when they plan to apply for a mortgage and recommend which of our Contractor Tax Solutions would be most suitable for their time frame.

So for example, if somebody is new to contracting and wants to apply for a mortgage within 6 months we would recommend our Umbrella PAYE option as they will not require an Income tax return for the application.

If they plan to apply after a year then we would advise them they can opt to be a Director as they would have a completed income tax return by the time they plan to apply! We are more than happy to chat with any potential contractor who might be interested or have questions around how contracting could be the right fit for them – just get in touch with us on hello@fenero.ie.

How long does it take to get set up under an Umbrella Company Solution?2023-04-18T10:04:24+01:00

We can get a contractor set up on the same day and send the agency or client a pack with all the relevant company and insurance details to finalise contracts.

What is an Umbrella Company?2023-04-18T10:08:49+01:00

It is a company that is already in existence, ready for a contractor to use. Essentially the contractor carries out their work and the Umbrella Company will issue invoices and collect payments on their behalf, ensuring they are maximising any allowable tax deductions and expenses along the way too. Contractors can be set up immediately within an Umbrella Company and start using it straight away – as the recruiter you will receive an agency pack the same day they sign up with all the relevant paperwork to finalise their contract.

As soon as they are finished contracting, they can simply leave the Umbrella Company. It is a straightforward, pay-as-you-go service.
